Description :

Herbacée annuelle ou pérenne selon les climats dont les tiges pubescentes rampantes plus ou moins ramifiées peuvent atteindre un mètre de longueur voir plus.

Son feuillage et ses fleurs ne peuvent guère s’élever à plus de 5 cm au-dessus du sol. Les feuilles sont opposées, paripennées, le plus souvent à six paires de folioles ovales. L’ensemble de la feuille mesure de 2,5 à 5 cm de long, mais chaque foliole ne mesure qu’entre 6 à 13 mm

Les fleurs jaunes sont de petite taille (de 6 à 13 mm), dotée d’un court pédoncule. Elles sont solitaires à l’aisselle des feuilles, en position latérale et alterne le long de la tige. Le calice a cinq sépales étroits, la corolle cinq pétales arrondis.

Le fruit étoilé est une capsule a cinq carpelles verruqueux portant chacun deux longues épines et deux plus petites. Cette disposition des épines est à l’origine du nom vernaculaire « Croix-de-Malte ». Ces épines peuvent se planter dans les pattes des animaux - d’où son nom kinyarwanda : « Qui impressionne les éléphants »

Les épines du fruit permettent à l’espèce de se propager à l’aide d’animaux qui peuvent transporter la graine sur de longues distances. Le fruit et ses graines peuvent aussi se déplacer en flottant sur de courtes distances lors de forts orages, car la plante pousse volontiers sur des terrains compacts à faible perméabilité instantanée.

La plante prospère dans les sols secs, meubles et sablonneux. On la trouve également en bordure de champ. Elle peut aussi pousser dans les sols plus lourds, fertiles et humides, ou des sols compactés, le long des chemins.

On la trouve principalement autour du bassin méditerranéen et dans les régions subtropicales du sous-continent indien, de Chine, d’Amérique Centrale et du Sud.

Usages de la plante

Nutrition :

Feuilles, jeunes pousses et fruits peuvent être consommés cuits. La plante est considérée comme un aliment reconstituant et tonique dans certaines régions.

Les capsules de graines non expansées sont parfois réduites en poudre et transformées en pain. Il s’agit d’un aliment de famine qui n’est utilisé qu’en période de pénurie.

Médecines traditionnelles :

Tribulus terrestris est utilisé depuis l’Antiquité dans les médecines traditionnelles des principales zones géographiques où la plate est endémique (médecine traditionnelle chinoise, indienne (Ayurveda) et méditerranéenne. La plante fait aussi partie de plusieurs pharmacopées africaines.

En Inde, « gokhru » est le nom Hindi le plus commun actuellement pour Tribulus terrestris. Dans un traité daté de 700 ans avant l’ère chrétienne, qui compile les connaissances médicales d’alors, le praticien ayurvédique Charaka décrit Tribulus terrestris, alors dénommé « gokshura » et ses indications. Des propriétés diurétiques, aphrodisiaques, toniques, rajeunissantes et fortifiantes sont attribuées à la plante. En Inde, les fruits ont ainsi été ou sont toujours utilisés dans le traitement de la stérilité, des troubles de l’érection et de la baisse de libido féminine. Les racines et les fruits sont en outre considérés comme ayant des propriétés cardiotoniques. Au Pakistan la plante est utilisée pour ses effets diurétiques et uricosuriques (réductrices du taux d’acide urique dans le sang).

Tribulus terrestris, qui est appelé « Ci Ji Li » en mandarin est classé parmi les plantes médicinales majeures dans le plus ancien ouvrage chinois connu décrivant la pharmacopée chinoise « Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing » (le Classique de la matière médicale du Laboureur Céleste) qui date vraisemblablement du début de l’ère chrétienne. La médecine traditionnelle chinoise nomme plante « herbe qui éteint le vent et arrête les tremblements. » Dans la pensée médicale chinoise, « le vent » renvoie aux maladies cardiovasculaires : hypertension, accidents vasculaires etc. Dans la pharmacopée chinoise, les fruits du Tribulus terrestris ont été utilisés pour tonifier les reins et comme diurétique et expectorant, pour améliorer la vue et pour le traiter les prurits cutanés, les maux de tête et des vertiges, et l’obstruction du canal mammaire.

- Affections rénales : macérât de la plante broyée dans de l’eau en voie orale. (Djibouti) ; Macérât de racine broyée dans de l’eau en voie orale (Soudan)

- Métrorragie (pertes de sang en dehors des règles) : Macération de tiges feuillées dans du lait en voie orale (Niger)

- Galactogène : Fruits en voie orale (Maurice)

- Dysménorrhée : totum en infusion (Algérie)

- Arthrite : friction avec des fruits et feuilles

- Rhumatismes : préparation avec Tribulus terrestris et Heteropogon contortus en application locale (Lesotho)

- Tonique : toute la plante cuite comme un légume

Action psychotrope

Des chercheurs en Afrique du Sud ont constaté que l’ingestion de plantes contenant de l’harmine agit sur l’esprit et la conscience. Cette substance psychotrope a utilisé dans le traitement de la maladie de Parkinson.

Activité aphrodisiaque

En 1847, un scientifique nommé Fritzsche a isolé une molécule chimique nommée « Harmine » qui est un des composés actifs de Tribulus terrestris et qui est utilisée comme stimulant et aphrodisiaque.

Différentes études suggèrent que l’administration de Tribulus augmente le désir sexuel des femmes atteintes de frigidité, sans effets secondaires et stimulent également la libido masculines.

Activité antiurolithique

Les fruits de la plante sont utilisés depuis longtemps dans plusieurs systèmes de médecine traditionnels pour le traitement de diverses maladies urinaires, dont l’urolithiase. Des données cliniques humaines indiquent que l’extrait aqueux et de fractions de fruits ou de plantes peut être utile dans le traitement de l’urolithiase.

Activité antidiabétique

Les saponines brutes de Tribulus terrestris ont montré une activité inhibitrice contre la α-glucosidase et une action inhibitrice de l’augmentation postprandiale de la glycémie et une action d’amélioration des symptômes du diabète insulinodépendant. Des essais cliniques attestent que l’extrait aqueux de Tribulus terrestris a une activité antidiabétique.

Prévention et traitement des maladies cardiovasculaires

Les études menées étayent les usages traditionnels et les propriétés cardioprotectrices, hypotensives et antihyperlipidémiques protectrices du myocarde.

Activité neuroprotectrice

Tribulus terrestris a un effet protecteur contre les lésions neuronales, principalement grâce à ses effets anti-inflammatoires et antioxydants. .

Activité anticancérigènes

Les saponines de Tribulus terrestris sont susceptibles d’affecter les processus d’apoptose et de métastase des cellules cancéreuses. Tribulus terrestris contient par ailleurs des composés fortement antioxydants

Toxicité : occasionne des troubles importants chez le mouton. Aucune étude n’a été réalisée sur la toxicité de cette plante pour l’homme, mais aucun accident n’a été recensé alors qu’elle est utilisée depuis des centaines d’années. On peut se demander si une administration régulière de Tribulus terrestris peut avoir des répercutions sur la santé à cause de ses effets sur le système nerveux central et sur le cœur, de plus son action hyperglycémiante peut être gênante chez les diabétiques.
